Large Black Pigs

We keep a few Large Black pigs on our holding, largely to keep our system fully in balance. Cheese making involves the production of surplus whey which we feed to the pigs as well as sugar beet and cereal.

Large Blacks are a traditional, rare breed of British pig, known more for their grazing than their rooting.

Regrettably, pigs are unable to get as much nutrition from grazing as ruminants so our pigs fit into our pastoral system more as a balancing act than active grazers.
